This week, our Reception class combined learning and creativity in an exciting art session inspired by their topic on Antarctica.

The children began by discussing the fascinating animals that live in this icy environment and the special physical features that help them survive. They explored different textures, comparing the smooth, blubbery skin of whales, the soft feathers of penguins and the shiny, scaly skin of fish. Using a range of materials found in the classroom, the children created patterns that reflected these textures.

In art, the pupils experimented with a new collage technique to create their backgrounds. They practised careful brush control, using gentle strokes with water to form wave-like patterns that mimicked the cold Antarctic sea. Powder paint in different shades of blue was then added and shaken across the page to create a beautiful marbled effect. To add depth and movement, the children flicked water onto their paintings, creating a sense of dimension.

To bring their scenes to life, the children added texture by dipping wool into glue to represent ice and snow. Finally, they created animal shapes from the textured patterned paper they had designed themselves and used collage pieces to create texture.

The finished collages were a wonderful display of creativity and imagination, showing excellent teamwork, fine motor skills and a growing understanding of the Antarctic environment. Well done, Reception!
